Developing a Crisis Communication Plan for Peachtree Creek Greenway

Developing a Crisis Communication Plan for Peachtree Creek Greenway

Overview: Peachtree Creek Greenway, a visionary project advocating for a multi-use trail connecting communities along the North Fork Peachtree Creek, has taken significant strides toward realizing its dream of connecting Atlanta, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Unincorporated DeKalb, and Doraville through a green corridor. Established by local residents in 2013, the non-profit organization has dedicated itself to creating safe, family-friendly paths that not only facilitate transportation and recreation but also enhance the environmental and social fabric of the metro Atlanta area.

Problem: Despite the organization's progress and contributions to community connectivity and wellness, potential crises threatening daily operations or community safety could undermine these achievements. Recognizing the need to safeguard its mission, reputation, and the communities it serves, Peachtree Creek Greenway faced the challenge of preparing for unforeseen events that could disrupt the Greenway's development and use.

Solution: In response, Peachtree Creek Greenway, in partnership with students from a Crisis Communications class, embarked on creating a comprehensive crisis communication plan. The plan was designed to equip the organization with the necessary tools and strategies to effectively manage and mitigate crises. Key elements of the plan included identifying a Crisis Management Team (CMT) with predefined roles such as team leader, social media analytics, lawyer, and fact-checker; establishing a media spokesperson protocol; and developing incident report forms, communication strategy worksheets, and contact lists for internal and external stakeholders.

Execution: The plan's development involved:

  1. Defining a clear purpose and objectives for crisis management, ensuring the organization remains prepared and responsive in various crisis scenarios.

  2. Establishing a structured CMT, ensuring each member understood their role and responsibilities in crisis situations.

  3. Creating a comprehensive contact list, ensuring quick and effective communication among team members and with key publics during a crisis.

  4. Designating a media spokesperson and providing guidelines for public communication, aiming to maintain credibility and effectively convey key messages to the public and media.

  5. Implementing rehearsal dates and crisis warning signs to test and refine the plan, enhancing the organization's readiness.

Results: The crisis communication plan provided Peachtree Creek Greenway with a robust framework to proactively address and manage potential crises. By preparing in advance, the organization enhanced its ability to protect the communities it serves, preserve its reputation, and continue its advocacy and construction efforts without interruption. The establishment of clear roles and communication channels within the CMT, along with strategic public messaging, ensured that Peachtree Creek Greenway could respond to crises with confidence and coherence. This proactive approach not only safeguarded the organization's operational integrity but also reinforced its commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all trail users. The successful development and implementation of the crisis communication plan stand as a testament to the organization's resilience and dedication to its vision of connecting communities through the Peachtree Creek Greenway.
